What a championship matchup this is shaping up to be. Both teams are high scoring and figure to keep it up against each other Monday night. After the Garden City Fighting Gophers' two-year absence and the John Taylor Pipers' three-year absence, both teams return to the Provincial Championship final in a rematch of the 2012 Championship, won by the Gophers 71-61. Both teams have faced off just once this season, in the Wesmen Classic Championship Final back in December, an 84-80 win for the Pipers in another excellent matchup. The Pipers are on a roll, having not lost a game to any Manitoban team this season. Averaging +25.6 points per game against opponents, all but three of their wins have come by 10 points or more, while cracking the century mark an astounding eight times, and allowing 70 points or less 16 times. Led by big man James Wagner with 48 points on 20-for-31 (64.5%) shooting, along with 22 rebounds and eight assists, the Pipers have all their starters running with 27 or more total points in the two games they have played, shooting at least 48.4% each. The Pipers lead the Provincial Championship with a 54.0% shooting percentage, including a tournament-leading 48.4% from three-point land, causing defenses to foul often, as they've attempted the most free throws of all teams with 37. Not slouching on either end of the court, the Pipers also have 101 defensive stops and limit their opponents to 37.8% shooting. The Fighting Gophers are on a roll of their own, with their last loss to a Manitoban team being the game against the Pipers, and the only other loss was avenged in the semifinal as they defeated the Oak Park Raiders. The Gophers average +32.4 points per game better than their opponents, holding opponents under 55 points per game. 25 of their 30 wins have come by double-digits, having only been limited to under 70 points six times. They have also broken the century mark nine times, one more than the Pipers, holding their opponents to 70 points or less in 29 games (28 wins). The five Garden City starters carry the bulk of the load in their games, having combined for 193 points in two games, while shooting 67-for-148 (45.3%), including 30 three-pointers (42.3%). Their fast-paced offense causes a lot of passing-and-shooting, with two-thirds (46-of-69) of their made shots being assisted. Not to be outdone, they've racked up 95 defensive stops, 43.4% opponents' shooting, and always seem to be able to respond to an opposing score with a quick layup or longball of their own. Both teams have players that can fill the stat sheet quickly, between the fast-paced play of Garden City and the methodical movement of John Taylor, and should cause this year's Provincial Championship final to be one of the best ever. |
